Your first 30 days in San Antonio: what to do, in order

By Phyllis Domingo, REALTOR® · San Antonio Relocation Specialist

Newcomers ask me the same question: what do we do first? Here is the order that actually works, week by week.

Week one: the boring essentials

Your first week in San Antonio should be about infrastructure, not sightseeing. Get the paperwork and the routines done while the boxes are still unpacking, and you will enjoy everything else a hundred times more.

Your week-one list:

  • Register your vehicles within 30 days and book your Texas driver license appointment, which can take a few weeks to get.
  • Set up trash, recycling, and water service if the move did not already do it.
  • Find your closest grocery store, pharmacy, urgent care, and veterinarian.
  • Introduce yourself to a neighbor and get the local intel: who mows, who cooks, which park has the best shade.

Week two: build your new routines

Once the essentials are handled, start building the rhythms that make a place feel like home: a coffee shop, a park, a farmers market, a gym or walking route.

San Antonio is a morning town in the summer, so locals do errands and exercise early and save evenings for patios and rivers. Adopt that rhythm now and the heat will never slow you down.

Week three: go be a tourist

Now the fun part. Give yourself a proper introduction to the city so you can stop feeling like a visitor.

Ride the River Walk barge once, walk the Mission Reach trail, and see the missions, including the Alamo. Hit the Pearl on a weekend morning for the farmers market. Browse Historic Market Square for lunch. Then pick one thing you would never have guessed you would love, and go do it.

Week four: make it yours

In week four, shift from doing the city to living in it. Join the neighborhood Facebook group, find the local running club or book club, and put a couple of events on the calendar, from First Friday in Southtown to a show at a Hill Country dance hall.

By the end of the month you should know your coffee order, your park bench, and at least one neighbor by name. That is the real moving checklist, and you will be done with it.
