The River Walk is the city's living room. Here is how to do a weekend there the way locals actually do it.
The river bend is only the beginning
Most visitors see the downtown River Walk loop and think they have seen it all. Locals know the river is a system: the classic bend downtown, the Museum Reach stretching north to the Pearl, and the Mission Reach heading south past the missions. A great weekend visits all three at a relaxed pace.
Start with the classic bend, the stone paths, arched bridges, and cypress-lined canal between the Alamo and the convention center. It is at its best early, before the crowds, when the light falls through the cypress and the river is glass.
Where to eat along the river
River dining is a sport here, and the options run from quick to celebratory:
- Boudro's on the Riverwalk, a River Walk institution known for tableside guacamole and Texas dishes.
- Paesanos Riverwalk, a San Antonio pasta favorite right on the bend.
- Iron Cactus for Mexican food and margaritas on the water.
- Alamo Biscuit Company and Panaderia for breakfast tacos and pan dulce to go.
Day two: the Pearl and the North Reach
Walk or bike the Museum Reach north from downtown, past the public art and the old brewery, and you land at the Pearl, the historic Pearl Brewery turned food hall, shops, hotel, and weekend farmers market. Saturday mornings at the Pearl farmers market are a San Antonio rite.
From there, loop back along the river or catch a ride south to Historic Market Square, the El Mercado, for lunch and live music, a block of color and flavor that has anchored the city for decades.
Bring the kids
The river barge tour is the single best first thing to do with kids: twenty minutes of history, bridges, and ducks. Brackenridge Park, the San Antonio Zoo, and the Japanese Tea Garden are a short drive north, and the Mission Reach's paved trail is perfect for family bikes.
End the day with a barge ride at dusk, when the lights come up and the river turns gold. It never gets old, even for people who have lived here their whole lives.
Plan it like a local
Book dinner reservations for riverfront tables a few days ahead in season, go early in summer before the heat builds, and keep cash for the margarita stands. The River Walk is free, walkable, and gloriously easy, and it is the reason most San Antonians bring every visitor to town here first.
